How does Individual Therapy Work?

Individual therapy starts with an assesment. You will meet with your therapist for a 60-90 minute initial session, where both of you will get to know one another and determine fit as client/therapist.

The specific modality used in therapy will be determined by your indicated needs. We use a variety of methods which are helpful, depending on needs. For example, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy is great for Relationship problems. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is very effective in the treatment of anxiety. Acceptance and Committment therapy (ACT) is valuable for managing emotions and regulating responses/trauma triggers.

You will be asked to elaborate on information provided from your intake forms, and discuss your history to include symptoms, relational issues, employment, and general life satisfaction.

If at any time you feel you are not connecting, we welcome you to tell us so that we can link you with someone who is a better fit.

How Does CouplesTherapy Work?

Our Therapists are trained in the Gottman Method, the “Gold Standard” of care for couples. You can read more about the Gottman Method here: Gottman Website

We also integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy as this is a valuable approach for going into the deeper emotional connection between partners. You can read more about Emotionally Focused Therapy here: EFT Website

Your first session will include a thorough interview with both partners present. You will be asked numerous questions about your relationship history, conflict styles, and connection.

The second session lasts 90 minutes and consists of two 45-minute individual interviews. Both partners will be interviewed per the Gottman Oral History Questionnaire, and you will be given the opportunity to share your personal insights to the relationship and your goals for improvement.

You will be given the opportunity to complete a comprehensive relationship checkup which is based on the Gottmans’ 40 years of empirical research.

I’m concerned about being judged for my non-traditional relationship. Will Therapy be Safe for me/us?

With decades of experience behind us, our therapists have pretty much heard it all! We are both friendly toward and trained in working with Ethical Non-Monogamy, Poly Relationships, and Kink-engaged partners.

Elizabeth is a member of AASECT, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists and has specific advanced training in areas of sex and sexuality.

Sylvia is trained in Consentual Non-Monogamous relationships and is pursuing additional certifications for sex-related therapies.

My partner and I get along fine on a daily basis, and we don’t have big arguments. Can we benefit from CouplesTherapy?

YES! Because you are in a pattern of “no conflict” doesn’t mean that there is no conflict. Usually, this means that both partners are withdrawn or that one or both partners is burned out with trying. Therapy can help you re-ignite intimacy, communication, and the connection you deserve.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between eye movement and the processing of traumatic or emotionally charged experiences in the brain. Developed by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting involves identifying and processing "brainspots" – specific eye positions that correlate with the activation of unresolved issues or trauma. The therapist assists the client in maintaining eye focus on these spots, allowing the brain to access and process deep-seated emotions and memories. This method is rooted in the understanding that the eyes can reveal areas of the brain where trauma is stored, and by maintaining attention on these spots, individuals can facilitate the release and resolution of emotional and psychological distress. Brainspotting is often utilized to address trauma, anxiety, and other emotional issues, offering a unique and targeted approach to accessing and processing underlying issues in therapy.
